100 Years of PSMLA: A glance into the archives

In 1942, Miss Mary-Louise Bailets, John Harris High School in Harrisburg, presented a paper entitled, “Advantages of Teaching South American pronunciation of Spanish”. Miss Bailets “brought out the fact that most of those who study Spanish in the United States expect to use the language in travel through Latin America…”

“Dr. John M. Grimm, of Dickinson College, discussed the ‘Practical Teaching of Modern Languages’. His theme was tied up with the effort to prepare men and women quickly to fill positions in the armed forces.”

“No meeting was held in 1943, as restrictions had been put on traveling that was considered non-essential to the war effort.”
