PSMLA Coffee Hours; Hispanic Heritage Month

Bomba con Buya

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Mercyhurst University will host Bomba con Buya, October 7-8, 2021. The Chicago-based Puerto Rican group works to preserve traditional bomba. Developed during the 18th century by the island's African descendants, bomba is the island's oldest surviving music and dance form. The group will give a workshop on campus on Thursday, October 7, at 7:00 p.m. in Taylor Little Theater.

Then, on Friday, October 8, 7 p.m., the group will give a bomba concert at the Martin Luther King Center, 312 Chestnut Street as part of Mercyhurst Institute for Arts and Culture's community outreach.  This event is sponsored by Mercyhurst's Hafenmaier College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, MIAC, the Office of Mission Integration, the Office of Student Life, and a generous donation to the Department of World Languages and Cultures by alum Sara Jaecks '04.

Both events are free and open to the public.
