100 Years of PSMLA: A glance into the archives
Celebrating 100 years of PSMLA!
Some things haven’t changed much….
The very first PSMLA meeting was called to order Dec. 28, 1920 in Harrisburg. There were two presentations:
- “How many years of modern foreign language should be given in the junior high school?” by Miss Marion Armstrong, Pittsburgh
- “What colleges most desire in modern language” by Mr. W. R. Anson, Philadelphia
These were followed by an important discussion: “The new high school program for Pennsylvania (which dropped modern language as a required subject) came in for general criticism. Thus goes on the battle for the humanities in a world that is turning materialistic.”
